More for Parents
This recipe is best suited for parents to make on their own or with minimal help from kids.

Servings: 6-9

Prep Time: 30 min.

Cook Time: 3 hours or overnight

Ingredients

  • 2 boxes (3 oz. each) gelatin dessert; (e.g., strawberry, berry blue, orange, or lime-flavored Jell-O)
  • 1 envelope (.25 oz.) unflavored gelatin
  • 1/2 cup ground vanilla wafers or graham crackers
  • 1/2 cup whipped topping (Cool Whip)
  • Sprinkles, mini chocolate chips and mini M&Ms for decoration

Supplies

  • A variety of cookie cutters in sea creature shapes

Directions

  1. Step 1

To make the gelatin, place 1/2 cup water in a medium bowl. Sprinkle the envelope of unflavored gelatin over the water and let stand about 5 minutes.

  2. Step 2

Next, bring 2 cups water to a boil. Pour the boiling water over the gelatin and add the 2 packages of flavored gelatin. Stir until the gelatin is completely dissolved.

  3. Step 3

Stir in 1 cup cold water. Pour the mixture into a 9 inch square baking dish. Refrigerate until set, at least 3 hours or overnight.

  4. Step 4

To unmold the gelatin, fill a pan larger than the 9 inch square with warm water. Dip the bottom of the gelatin pan in the warm water for several seconds to loosen the gelatin. Run a small knife around the outer edge of pan. Invert the pan onto a clean work surface and tap slightly to release the gelatin.

  5. Step 5

Using sea creature cookie cutters, cut out as many shapes from the gelatin as possible. Transfer the shapes with a spatula to serving plates with some of the ground vanilla wafers as “sand” onto to a serving platter.

  6. Step 6

Spoon the whipped topping into a plastic resealable bag and snip a very small corner from the bag. Pipe eyes, lines and fins on top of the shapes with the whipped topping. Add sprinkles, chips or mini M&Ms as decorations.

Tip: If making more than one flavor of gelatin, use the scraps to make small pieces of seaweed along side the cut outs.
