Servings: 20

Prep Time: 20 min.

Cook Time: 45-50 min.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups old-fashioned oats
  • 1 cup puffed rice cereal
  • 1/2 cup sliced almonds
  • 1/2 cup flax seed
  • 1/2 cup chopped dried pineapple
  • 1/2 cup dried strawberries
  • 1/4 cup sunflower seeds
  • 1/4 cup lightly packed dried, shredded coconut
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries or blueberries
  • 2 tbsp. sesame seeds
  • 2 tbsp. wheat germ
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil

Supplies

  • Jelly roll pan
  • Aluminum foil
  • Airtight storage container
Tip: For this recipe, you can use quick-cooking oats, but not instant oatmeal.

Directions

  1. Step 1

Preheat the oven to 300°F. Line a jelly roll pan with foil.

  2. Step 2

Help kids measure out all of the dry ingredients and pour in a large bowl. Toss with your hands or two large spoons to mix well. Drizzle the honey and the oil over the mixture and stir to coat well. Spread the mixture evenly onto the prepared pan. Place the pan in the oven and bake, stirring every 15 minutes, until lightly toasted and golden, about 45 to 50 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

  3. Step 3

Transfer the cool cereal mixture to a cutting board. Using your fingers, break the mixture into small pieces. Transfer to an airtight container. Cereal buddies will keep up to three weeks.

Tip: To spread the mixture to an even layer try using a hard plastic spatula or wooden spoon coated with butter or margarine.
