Geo Cupcakes

Geo's cupcakes are umirrific! You can talk about the different shapes listed in this recipe while making these cupcakes.

Ingredients

• 12 vanilla cupcakes baked in foil liners
• 1 can (16 oz.) vanilla frosting
• Blue, yellow, and red food coloring
• 6 orange spice drops
• 24 red licorice pastels
• 24 black candy coated sunflower seeds, (Sunny Seed drops)

Supplies

• Resealable plastic bags
• Wire cooling rack

Directions

1. Step 1

   In a shallow bowl, tint 1 cup of the vanilla frosting with the blue food coloring. Tint 1/4 cup of the vanilla frosting bright yellow and spoon into a resealable bag. Tint 1/4 cup of the vanilla frosting dark blue and spoon into a resealable bag. Tint 2 tablespoons of frosting red and spoon into a resealable bag. Tint the remaining vanilla frosting pale pink--just add a bit of the red food coloring.

2. Step 2

   Heat the blue frosting in a shallow bowl in the microwave for 10 seconds, stir well. Continue to microwave for 5-second intervals, stirring well, until the thickness is similar to that of slightly whipped cream.

3. Step 3

   Dip the top of a cupcake in the melted frosting up to the foil liner. Allow the excess frosting to drip off. Invert and place on a wire rack. Repeat with the remaining cupcakes.

4. Step 4

   Snip a small corner from the bag with the yellow frosting. Notice the triangle shape after snipping the corner of the bag! Pipe an oval over the bottom third of cupcake as Geo's face. Fill in with some of the light pink frosting.

5. Step 5

   Add the black candies as the eyes. Snip a very small corner from the bags containing the dark blue and red frosting. Pipe hair and eyebrows with the dark blue frosting. Pipe a red mouth.

6. Step 6

   Cut spice drops in half crosswise and flatten slightly. Press a licorice pastel into each of the spice drops. Press the cut end of spice drop on either side of the top of the cupcake as Geo's antennae.

7. Step 7

   Repeat with the remaining cupcakes.

8. Play & Learn Together

   Practice early math with cupcake decorations! Try counting and sorting the candy ingredients with your child. Help your child count out each of the candy ingredients and then sort them into separate piles by color and then by ingredient. When it's time to add these ingredients, read aloud how many pieces will be needed and ask your child to count out and retrieve the ingredients from their piles.
