Step-by-Step Video

Ingredients

  • 1 roll (18 oz.) refrigerated sugar-cookie dough
  • 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1 box (16 oz.) confectioners' sugar
  • 3 tbsp. meringue or egg-white powder
  • Red, orange, brown, yellow, and black food coloring
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Candy corn

Supplies

  • Resealable Plastic Bags
  • Parchment Paper
Tip: Check your market for a package of plastic frosting bags. To fill one, fold the top half down, holding the bottom with one hand. With the other hand, and using a large spoon, scoop frosting into it. Unfold the bag. To use the bag, hold at the top and push down using a twisting motion.

Directions

  1. Step 1

Preheat oven to 350°F. Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper.

  2. Step 2

Knead the cookie dough, flour, and cinnamon together on a clean work surface until smooth. Divide the dough in half. Roll out one piece of dough to a scant 1/4-inch thickness.

  3. Step 3

Trace your child's hand on a sheet of paper and cut out template. Using the paper hand template cut out as many hand shapes as possible. Transfer to the prepared sheet pans. Repeat with the remaining dough and reroll scraps to make about 12 cookies. Bake until cookies are golden brown, about 10 to 12 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack and cool completely. Repeat with remaining cookies.

  4. Step 4

Beat the confectioners' sugar with the egg-white powder and 6 tablespoons of warm water in a medium mixing bowl until thick, about 2 minutes. Tint 2 tablespoons of the frosting red and spoon into a small resealable bag. Divide the remaining frosting between four bowls. Tint each bowl orange, yellow, brown, and black. Spoon each color into a separate resealable bag.

  5. Step 5

Snip a small corner from the bags with the frostings. Pipe and outline on the fingers with the brown orange, yellow, and red (check that the colors are correct) frostings to make the feathers of the turkey cookies. Pipe white dots for the eyes and add a mini chocolate chip, pointed end in, for the pupils. Attach the candy corn for the beak with the red frosting, and pipe a red line for the waddle. Pipe brown lines of frosting around the edge of the cookie. Pipe orange feet. Pipe a name with the black frosting. Let cookies dry at least 1 hour.

Tip: Tint the frosting and fill the frosting bags while the cookies are baking and cooling so you're ready to go with the next step.
