Servings: 10

Prep Time: 15 min.

Ingredients

  • 1 can (15.5 oz.) chick peas (garbanzo beans), drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 small clove garlic
  • 2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 1/2 tbsp. fresh lemon juice
  • 2 to 3 tbsp. warm water
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • Items for dipping: Pita bread (sliced into small triangles), red and yellow pepper strips, and carrot sticks or baby carrots
Tip: One lemon is probably enough for this recipe. Kids can roll the lemon on the counter to prepare it for juicing. Be sure to press down as hard as you can!

Directions

  1. Step 1

Adults can combine the chick peas, garlic, and olive oil in the bowl of a food processor. Cover and pulse until the mixture is fairly smooth. With the food processor running slowly, add the lemon juice and 2 tablespoons of the warm water. Remove the cover and scrape down the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula. Pour the hummus into a small bowl. Kids can taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Add another tablespoon of water if desired.

  2. Step 2

Place the hummus bowl in the center of a round plate or platter. Arrange items for dipping around the bowl, so that the hummus looks like the center of the sun, and the dippers look like the sun's rays.

Tip: To make your hummus look beautiful, spread a thick layer on a small plate. Use the back of the spoon to make shallow indentations in the hummus. Sprinkle with a little paprika and drizzle with a little olive oil.
