Jumbo Circus Animal Cookies

The animal crackers you remember from your childhood have grown into gigantic animal cookies.

Ingredients

• 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 cup graham flour
• 1/2 tsp. baking soda
• 1/4 tsp. salt
• 6 tbsp. butter, softened
• 1/2 cup light brown sugar, lightly packed
• 1/3 cup milk

Directions

1. Step 1

   Have your child help combine the flours, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl. Beat the butter and brown sugar with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add the flour mixture, alternating with the milk, until the dough just comes together. (It will be dry.) Transfer the dough to a clean work surface and knead slightly. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

2. Step 2

   Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line two or three cookie sheets with parchment paper. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to a scant 1/4-inch thickness. Following the templates as a guide, cut out the cookie shapes with a small sharp knife. Transfer the dough pieces to the prepared cookie sheets, about 1-inch apart. Score the cookies with a toothpick or small knife to make designs on top of the dough. Bake the cookies until golden, about 8 to 10 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack and cool completely. Continue with the remaining dough.

3. Step 3

   Serve with tall glasses of milk.
