Servings: 16

Prep Time: 1 hr.

Cook Time: 15 min.

Ingredients

  • 1 box (16.5 oz.) yellow cake mix
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 can (16 oz.) plus 1 1/2 cups vanilla frosting
  • Neon blue, blue, green, red, yellow, and purple food coloring
  • 1 cup dark chocolate frosting
  • 1 tbsp. green and orange flower sprinkles (Wilton)
  • 10 pink or white marshmallows
  • Red decorating spray (Wilton or Cake Mate)

Supplies

  • 10 1/2 x 15 1/2 jelly roll pan
  • Wax paper
  • Wire rack
  • 10 freezer-weight plastic resealable bags
  • Max & Ruby Cake Template
  • Toothpick or craft brush

Directions

  1. Step 1

Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease, flour and line a 10 1/2" by 15 1/2" jelly roll pan with waxed paper.

  2. Step 2

Prepare the cake mix according to package directions, except replace the water with the buttermilk. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread top to make smooth.

  3. Step 3

Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 15 to 17 minutes. Transfer the cake to a wire rack and cool completely.

  4. Step 4

Tint 2/3 cup of the vanilla frosting light blue with the neon blue food coloring. Tint 1/3 cup of the frosting bright green. Tint 3 tablespoons of the vanilla frosting bright blue. Tint 3 tablespoons bright yellow. Tint 2 tablespoons light pink. Tint 2 tablespoons purple. Tint 1 tablespoon red. Spoon 3 tablespoons of the vanilla frosting into a small freezer-weight resealable bag. Spoon each color and the chocolate frosting into separate small freezer-weight resealable bag. Seal the bags.

  5. Step 5

For the strawberries, cut the marshmallows in half on the diagonal. Arrange the marshmallows, cut side down on a sheet of wax paper. Use the red color spray to lightly coat and make the marshmallows red. Let set.

  6. Step 6

Trim the top of the cake to make level. Transfer the cake, trimmed side down, onto a serving platter. Spread some of the remaining vanilla frosting on the sides of the cake to cover and a very thin coat on top. Cut out the template provided. Arrange the template on top of the cake. Use a toothpick to score an outline of Max and Ruby holding hands. Remove the template. Snip a small, 1/8-inch corner, from the bag with the chocolate frosting. Pipe the outlines of Max and Ruby, avoiding the face, whiskers and smaller detail. (Make sure that all the frosting lines connect--these will be your flood gates.)

  7. Step 7

Work with one color frosting at a time. Heat the bright blue frosting for about 5 seconds, massaging the bag and making sure that the frosting isn't too hot or thinned. Snip a very small (less than 1/8-inch) corner from the bag. Fill in Max's jumper area with the blue frosting, using a toothpick or clean craft brush to help the frosting move into smaller spaces. Be careful not to over fill the area. Repeat with the remaining colors, filling in the dress and shirt, head and ending with the light blue background. For this area it is better to snip a larger corner and start at one corner and work your way around the cake. Place the cake in the refrigerator to set for about 30 minutes.

  8. Step 8

Remove the cake from the refrigerator. Pipe the chocolate details like the face, paws, and whiskers. Add the light pink frosting for the ears. Add the red stripes to Max's shirt. Add the flower decorations to Ruby's dress.

  9. Step 9

Spoon any remaining vanilla frosting into a freezer-weight resealale bag. Snip a small 1/4-inch corner from the bag. Pipe a decorative edge around the top border of the cake. Add the red marshmallows, cut side down, randomly around the cake. Pipe the seeds of the strawberries with the chocolate frosting. Snip a small corner from the bag with the green frosting and pipe the stems and vines on the strawberries.
