Step-by-Step Video

Ingredients

  • Pie Crust:
  • 1 package ready made pie crusts
  • Pumpkin Filling:
  • 1 can (15 oz.) plain pumpkin purée
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup lightly packed light brown sugar
  • 1 1/4 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 can (12 oz.) evaporated milk
  • 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips (optional)
  • Moose Pie Topper:
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp. chocolate sprinkles
  • 5 drops yellow food coloring
  • 1 tbsp. yellow decorating sugar
  • 2 mini chocolate chips
  • 2 brown and 1 red candy-coated chocolate, (M&M)

Supplies

  • 9-in. pie plate
  • Moose Pie Topper Template
Tip: For a good old-fashioned pumpkin pie, feel free to omit the chocolate chips.

Directions

  1. Step 1: Prepare the crust

Preheat the oven to 425°F. Unroll one of the ready-made pie crusts into a 9-inch pie plate. Press into the pan, allowing the excess to hang over the edge. Fold the excess dough under, so that it's even with the plate's rim, and pinch the edges to make a decorative design.

  2. Step 2: Make the pie

In a large bowl combine the pumpkin purée, sugars, and spices. Mix until well blended. Add the beaten eggs and mix well. Gradually add the evaporated milk, mixing while adding, until smooth. Stir in the mini chips or sprinkle them on top. Carefully pour the mixture into the prepared pie crust. Bake for 15 minutes at 425°F and then lower the oven temperature to 350°F. Continue to bake until the center is just set; 45 to 50 minutes longer. Transfer the pie to a cooling rack.

  3. Step 3: Cut out the Moose topper

Place a large piece of aluminum foil onto a cutting board. Unroll the remaining ready-made pie dough onto the foil. From the printed template, cut out the Moose's shape and place it on top of the dough. Using a small knife, cut out Moose's shape from the dough.

  4. Step 4: Decorate the Moose topper

Beat the egg in a small bowl until blended. Lightly brush the antlers with the egg wash and top with the chocolate sprinkles. Tint the remaining egg wash with the food coloring. Mark the two circles for the eyes with a toothpick. Brush all of the Moose, except for the eyes and antlers with the tinted egg wash. Sprinkle with the yellow sugar. Add some chocolate sprinkles for the eyebrows, feet, and toes. Score an area for the mouth and add the two mini chips as the nose.

  5. Step 5: Bake the Moose topper

Transfer the dough and aluminum foil to a baking pan. Place in the oven and bake until the dough is just beginning to brown, 7 to 10 minutes.

  6. Step 6: Complete the pie

Transfer the Moose topper to a wire rack and let it cool completely. Carefully transfer the Moose to the top of the cooled pie. Cut the red candy in half and add as the mouth. Add the brown candies as the eyes.
