Transform an ordinary sheet cake into a cake fit for a princess. Little hands can help count & sort ingredients.
Watch Kai-lan every day on Nick Jr.
Spoon 3 tablespoons of the vanilla frosting into a small plastic resealable bag. Tint 1/2 cup of the vanilla frosting bright pink with the neon food coloring. Spoon the frosting into a small plastic resealable bag. Tint the remaining vanilla frosting pale beige using 1/2 teaspoon of the dark chocolate frosting and 2 drops of the yellow food coloring. To prevent frosting from drying out, cover it until it's ready to use. Tint the remaining dark chocolate frosting black with the black food coloring. Spoon 1/2 cup of the black frosting into a pastry bag fitted with a plain #2 tip or a small plastic resealable bag with a corner snipped off. Cover the remaining black frosting until ready to use.
Line a cookie sheet with wax paper. Heat the yellow fruit chews in the microwave for no more than 3 seconds to soften slightly. (Note: do not heat fruit chews for more than 3 seconds). Press 4 of the yellow fruit chews together and roll out into a strip 1 x 12 inches long. Use a pizza wheel or clean scissors to cut the fruit chew. Cut one fruit chew in half and shape each piece into the swirl for Kai-lan's crown. Roll out one fruit chew and cut into a heart shape using the heart template. Press the 2 remaining yellow fruit chews together, roll out and cut into her neck piece using the template. Transfer the pieces to the sheet of wax paper until ready to use.
Heat the blue and the pink fruit chews in the microwave for no more than 3 seconds to soften slightly. Press 5 of the blue fruit chews together and roll out to a 1/8th inch thickness. Use the template to cut out 10 teardrop shapes and to make the 5 petal flowers. Cut out a 2-inch strip for her collar. Cut the remaining blue fruit chew in half lengthwise. Roll out each piece to make a strip about 1x2 inches long. Cut four strips lengthwise into the fruit chew, but not all the way to make the tassels. Roll out the pink fruit chew and cut out the heart shape using the template. Cut a small oval of the pink fruit chew for Kai-lan's tongue. Transfer the pieces to the wax paper.
Heat the chocolate taffy pieces in the microwave for no more than 3 seconds to soften slightly. Roll out each piece to a 1/8th inch thickness. Cut out Kai-lan's irises using the template. Transfer the pieces to the wax paper.
Place the cake on a clean work surface. Use a small serrated knife to cut out the cake shape with the template. Discard the scraps or save them for snacking.
Transfer the trimmed cake to a serving platter or a cardboard surface covered with foil. Use a toothpick to score Kai-lan's hair and dress into the cake as a guide.
Spread the pale beige frosting over the area of cake for Kai-lan's face and make smooth. Snip a very small corner from all of the bags with the frosting. Use the black frosting to pipe an outline of her hair. Fill in the area with the black frosting from the bowl and make smooth. Fill in the dress area on the cake with some of the pink frosting and make smooth. Use the template and a toothpick to mark the eyes. Pipe the vanilla frosting and fill in for her eyes and make smooth.
Using the photo as a guide, arrange the yellow candies as Kai-lan's crown. Place the pink heart on top of the yellow heart candy and place in the center of the yellow strip of candy. Press the tips of 5 of the blue tear drop shape candies to make a flower. Repeat with the remaining 5 pieces. Place the flowers on either side of her hair. Add the yellow piece of fruit chew as the front of her dress with the blue strip of fruit chew. Pipe a 2 inch line of yellow frosting from the base of the flower on her hair and add the 2 blue tassels on either side of the cake. Add the yellow candies.
Pipe the black frosting details of Kai-lan's eyes, nose, eye brows, and mouth. Add the chocolate taffy pieces as her eyes. Pipe the black frosting as the pupils and a dot of vanilla frosting on top of the pupils to add 'sparkle' to her eyes.
