Place the egg yolks and 1/4 cup of the sugar in a medium metal bowl and whisk until well blended. Place the bowl over a small pot of simmering water. Whisk the egg yolks and sugar until thick and yellow and the temperature reaches 140°F.
Remove the bowl from the simmering water and whisk in the orange juice until smooth. Your child can help add the chopped fruit. Then, stir well.
Meanwhile in a clean bowl, beat the egg whites to soft peaks. Gradually add the remaining 1/4 cup of sugar until the egg whites are glossy. Fold the egg whites into the fruit mixture, 1/3 at a time, until just blended.
Spoon the mixture into eight 1-cup dessert bowls and place into the freezer. Let freeze until set, at least 2 hours or overnight.
Just before serving, remove the whips from the freezer and top with a dollop of whipped topping. Have your child top each with a maraschino cherry.
