Fireflies!
by Julie Brinckloe
In this magical, transcendent little charmer, a young boy has captured hundreds of fireflies in a glass jar on a warm summer's night. Lying awake at night, he is fascinated and excited at the moonlike glow the flies produce. But as the lights of the fireflies start to ebb he must make an all-too-human decision: Is his personal pleasure more important than the lives of his flies?

Hooray for Diffendoofer Day!
by Dr. Seuss, with some help from Jack Prelutsky & Lane Smith
In this hysterical collaboration between three of the leading lights of children's lit, the children of Diffendoofer School must take a standardized test to prove its worth. As their dedicated teacher Miss Bonkers tells her charges in classic Seussian style: "We've taught you that the earth is round/That red and white make pink/And something else that matters more/We've taught you how to think."

Tuesday
by David Wiesner
With few words and exquisitely executed palette, this 1992 Caldecott Medal winner evokes surreal images of an army of frogs on the move for the night. Riding their lily pads like magic carpets, they take delight in scaring some birds, startling dogs, and even changing the channel on dozing Granny. Hop at the chance to "read" this book with your youngsters.

The Library
by Sarah Stewart
In this funny, affectionate verse-story that pays homage to the love of reading and of giving, bookworm Elizabeth Brown fills her house, her life, and her time with books--and even more books. Finally, when even her front door is blocked by books she decides to donate the house and book collection to a library. A terrific story to share with your child to promote the world of books and the love of reading.

We're Going on a Bear Hunt
by Michael Rosen
A father and his four children take a fantastic journey following a bear down a grassy slope, across a river, through the mud, and across icy landscapes. Onomatopoetic verse and alternating black-and white and full-color illustrations take kids on a wild romp through the further reaches of their imagination. A warm, snuggly ending reassures anxious readers.
